Description: Under the general direction of the Director of Olin and Uris Libraries, the Director of the Department of Research and Learning Services (R&LS) in Olin and Uris Libraries provides leadership, guidance, expertise, encouragement, and inspiration to a department whose mission is to enable and enhance the academic pursuits of Cornell faculty and students.

The R&LS Department consists of 14 librarians, 7 staff members and a number of student workers. The department provides reference, instruction, collection development, outreach, and liaison services in the humanities and social sciences, using our research collections of electronic, print, map, and media resources. The primary user population comprises students, faculty and staff in the College of Arts and Sciences, but the department also serves the entire Cornell patron base in researching, teaching and learning in the humanities and social sciences.

The Director will play a critical role in charting the future directions of public services in Olin and Uris Libraries, as well as the entire Cornell University Library system and must therefore be an exceptional advocate for our current and anticipated future patron needs, versatile as a leader and manager, flexible in outlook, and an excellent team player.

Digital Literacy Train-the-Trainer workshop

NYLA, SCRLC, and Finger Lakes Library System (FLLS) are happy to announce a free

Digital Literacy Train-the-Trainer workshop

Date: Thursday, 23 May
Location: Tompkins County Public Library, Ithaca (map)

This six-hour workshop is designed to instruct library staff on how train colleagues and the public, providing uniform and standardized digital literacy content throughout the state. It also provides tips and techniques on teaching the curriculum to adults. Travel and substitute staffing reimbursements are available to eligible libraries, and the workshop provides continuing education credit.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Position is a tenure-track, full-time, twelve month academic faculty position responsible for the leadership and management of the Teaching Materials Center of Memorial Library reporting to the Director of Libraries.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree from a library and information science program, accredited by the American Library Association.

Mann Library, part of the Cornell University Library (CUL), is looking for a service oriented, creative, technically skilled professional who thrives in an innovative work environment and is energized by the opportunity to lead the library’s information literacy program.  Candidates should also have a strong background and interest in the life sciences in order to develop and implement highly effective services in support of Cornell’s talented and ambitious undergraduate life sciences students.  Working on a team of 15 colleagues who make up the Mann Library Services and Collections librarians, the Instruction Coordinator/Undergraduate Life Sciences Librarian will have the opportunity to learn from and contribute to the overall public services program at Mann Library.  The librarian in this position will also play a key role on the campus-wide information literacy team, which is embarking on a new initiative to build the CUL campus-wide information literacy program as part of the implementation of the Cornell University Library 2011-2015 strategic plan.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Provide leadership and planning for the Mann Library instruction/information literacy program in response to College learning outcomes and evolving needs.
  • Work with Mann Learning Technologies and Assessment Librarian to develop pedagogically rich tools and learning experiences to enhance information literacy programs.
  • Serve as lead instructor for undergraduate life sciences information literacy programs, including partnering with faculty to integrate information literacy competencies into the undergraduate biology, agriculture and environmental sciences curricula.
  • Develop and provide innovative information services for the undergraduate life sciences community.
  • Serve as part of the team at Mann delivering general information services to the Cornell community, including reference and consulting services and instruction in information management.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Colgate University Libraries seeks a creative and user-oriented librarian to serve as Systems Librarian. Reporting to the Head of Digital Initiatives and Resources, this person will share leadership and responsibility for planning, developing, integrating, implementing, and maintaining the digital systems and services through which the Libraries support users in finding and using information. The primary focus will include (but not be limited to) the Libraries’ integrated library system (currently Innovative Interfaces/III), interlibrary services system, the Dematic Library Automated Storage and Retrieval (LASR) system, and digital publishing platforms.

The successful candidate will collaborate with librarians, staff, technologists, and faculty in a cutting edge library and technology facility. The person will have a strong philosophical and functional grounding in library services and the provision of technical and patron support in a library setting.

QUALIFICATIONS:
An ALA-accredited master’s degree or an equivalent master’s degree, plus two years’ experience working in a library setting. All librarians are expected to lead and work in a collaborative environment, to possess a strong public service orientation, to communicate effectively, to manage projects efficiently, and to work some evening, weekend, and holiday hours.

The successful candidate will possess the best combination of the following:

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; adaptability, creativity, and an aptitude to learn new technological tools and techniques
  • Experience and interest in providing user (preferably patron) support, reference service, and information literacy instruction
  • Working knowledge of an ILS (Innovative Interfaces Millennium/Sierra preferred but not required)
  • Proficiency with one or more programming or scripting languages and HTML/CSS
  • Familiarity with the MARC cataloging format
  • Working knowledge of the database technologies used to store, manipulate, and query structured data
  • Proficiency with standard desktop software and hardware
  • Familiarity with current and emerging trends, standards and technologies, and the intellectual curiosity to investigate, advise, and collaboratively implement new technology solutions
