UNYSLA Spring Meeting Wrap-Up with Allison Perry

What a great Spring Conference last week in Ithaca, NY. More than 20 librarians from across the state attended The Library is a Growing Organism:  Innovative Methods, Classic Missions. With Jim DelRosso (president-elect) planning the program, we had speakers from various academic libraries presenting on citation habits, bibliometrics, and creating an innovative culture within your library. The speakers were engaging as attendees asked many questions and shared their experiences with each other. The conference also had two student shadows, Sara Brown and Esther Jackson, both from University at Buffalo, that introduced the speakers. Stay tuned as they write up their experiences and share them with the chapter on our website.

Spring Meeting Highlight – Bibliometrics

The Library is a Growing Organism: Innovative Methods, Classic Missions
Date: Friday, 20 April
Time: 9:00 – 3:30
Location: Ithaca, NY (map)

Join us this April as Elaine Lasda-Bergman provides an overview of the basics of bibliometrics and explains some of the resources for measuring scholarly output.

Bibliometrics: New Ways to Measure Scholarly Output – Analyzing citation patterns in scholarly literature has long been a means of tracing the history and transformation of ideas as well as measuring the impact or output of individual scholars, journals, institutions, even nations. The so-called “ISI Indexes” (now Web of Science) are the most established and well known resources for bibliometric analysis. More recently, Scopus and Google Scholar are now the “upstart” resources for locating citing references. In addition, new tools and metrics such as the h-index, e-index, SNIP, SCImago Journal Rank, and Publish or Perish have provided the researcher with a greater variety of bibliometric indicators that both compete with and complement those found in traditional sources. This presentation will provide an overview of the basics of bibliometrics and explain some of these new resources for measuring scholarly output.
