UNYSLA Board Election 2015

UNYSLA Board Election 2015

The Election for the Board of the Upstate NY Chapter of SLA is now live. The open positions and the candidates for each are as follows:

Candidate(s) for President – Elect

Stephanie JH McReynolds, Syracuse University
Stephanie JH McReynolds is new to the area, having relocated last year in order to accept the business librarian position at Syracuse University Libraries, but she is not new to SLA. She has served the St. Louis Chapter as newsletter editor, membership director, president-elect, and president. Stephanie is looking forward to the prospect of continuing her SLA service and getting to know local SLA members better by planning UNYSLA conferences as president-elect.

Entangled terrain: institutional support for open access

Entangled terrain: institutional support for open access

Many colleges and universities offer institutional support for faculty and graduate students who wish to publish in open access journals. Despite such institutional support, many junior faculty who wish to support open access are warned by senior faculty that publishing in open access journals may be too risky. What is the role of the Library in such a complex conversation, and what are some existing and emerging services for awareness and engagement?

Please plan on joining the Upstate New York chapter of SLA (UNYSLA) as we dig deep into the evolving world of open access.  Open access content, free to the end user, affects publishers, authors, and institutions. In this program we’ll view open access from their perspectives, learn how they make the business case for open access content, what people are doing to promote and support open access, and see where the future may take us.

Open Access: Breaking Out All Over

Open Access: Breaking Out All Over

Open access is no longer a case of if, but rather when and how we are going to cope with it. The 2013 White House directive was truly as stunning development, mandating open access to both publications and data for virtually all research funded by the Federal Government. What does this mean for scholars, institutions, and libraries? Our first glimpse of how the 23 affected agencies will comply is the July 2014 release of the Department of Energy policy. How will the new policies shape the overall move towards open access? How will this impact our collections, services, and outreach.
