Meet our Board Member – Ruth Owens

Ruth_CardCatalog2Ruth Owens is the current treasurer of UNYSLA and an assistant librarian at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF). Because SUNY ESF is a small college with a small library, Ruth has many varied responsibilities. She manages interlibrary loan and acquisitions/collection development, provides research help (reference), teaches a one-credit information literacy course, and is the librarian liaison to the chemistry and engineering departments. Ruth enjoys connecting people to information whether that is through interlibrary loan, teaching, or simply answering questions. Her professional interests include public services, resource sharing, and information literacy. She holds a MSLIS from Syracuse University and a BS in zoology from Colorado State University.

Syracuse Librarians socialized and celebrated

Syracuse area librarians got together Wednesday December 3rd at Al’s Wine and Whiskey Lounge in downtown Syracuse to celebrate the holiday season.  The event was hosted by UNYSLA and was open to librarians, both SLA and non-SLA members, and SU’s iSchool students.  Librarians from CLRC, SUNY Upstate Medical University Library, Supreme Court Library, Syracuse University Libraries, Liverpool Public Library, Law firm libraries, Law Library Consultants, and Bryant and Stratton Library attended this event.  Over good food and drinks we made new friends and contacts to help us all succeed in our profession.  The response was so positive we will definitely be having another social within the next few months.  So be sure to mark your calendar when the next social is announced.  In fact, several librarians came to specifically meet with students about upcoming opportunities in libraries so I hope iSchool students attend the next social.
