Instruction & Outreach Position at Maritime College (New York, NY)

The Instruction and Outreach Librarian will be in charge of library instruction initiatives, including the development and implementation of an integrated, scaffolded information literacy program. The Instruction and Outreach Librarian will also coordinate library outreach efforts across the campus and community, managing a vibrant calendar of cultural events and library-specific initiatives that enrich student and faculty experience.

  • Develop and implement a robust information literacy program, based on program and institution-wide learning outcomes and the ACRL information literacy framework
  • Manage and assess information literacy instruction including LEAD library sessions
  • Work with colleagues across SUNY and the profession on information-literacy initiatives
  • Working with the Digital Services Librarian, manage the library’s LibGuides and other emerging content delivery platforms, making sure they are kept up to date and tied to learning outcomes.
  • Working with the Scholarly Communications Librarian, highlight student research.
  • Organize the Library Lecture series and other outreach initiatives that build community and promote the library.
  • Represent the library in planning for campus-wide events.
  • Working with the Archivist, create meaningful exhibits that promote the library’s collection or services.
  • Collaborate with Student Affairs to maximize success of Academic Success Center and other academic support initiatives
  • Promote the collection to the community and researchers
  • Work with Content Services librarian to connect with each department about collection needs and use of collection
  • Connect researchers to faculty experts

As part of the library faculty team:

  • Serves as liaison to one or more academic departments
  • Serves on various campus and SUNY-wide committees and participates in college governance
  • Provides in-person and virtual reference services
  • Participates in departmental activities
  • Actively participates in scholarly work


Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in information and/or library science from an ALA-accredited school or an ALA-approved foreign equivalent.
  • Strong customer service ethic
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational and problem solving ability
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a collegial setting
  • Ability to manage a diverse workload
  • Willingness to undertake library and college committee responsibilities, professional development, and scholarship
