Elaine Lasda Bergman Receives 2016 UNYSLA Member Merit Award!

Elaine Lasda Bergman was presented with the 2016 Upstate New York SLA (UNYSLA) Chapter Member Merit Award at the UNYSLA conference on October 21, 2016.  For those that don’t know Elaine, she is the Subject Librarian for Social Welfare, Gerontology, and the Dewey Library Reference collection at the Dewey Graduate Library at the University of Albany.  She holds a B.A. in History from the SUNY College at Oswego, an M.L.S. from the University at Albany, and Master’s-level Certificate of Advanced Study in Data Science from Syracuse University.

Sue Cardinal, the Awards Chair quoted Susan Kendrick who worked closely with Elaine.  “Her entire spirit, collaborative nature, and intelligence is infused into everything she does and her efforts have benefitted so many in the information profession. In the past few years alone, she has arranged UNYSLA webinars on open data, big data, and altmetrics, bringing librarians up to speed on these emerging areas of research. She’s built relationships and partnerships between UNYSLA and other SLA Divisions such as Social Sciences and Transportation. She has also developed UNYSLA partnerships with organizations outside of SLA such as NYLA and SUNYLA. As PR Chair she designed the UNYSLA brochure and the UNYSLA bottle openers, which were a big hit. What’s more, she’s always been incredibly willing to help with UNYSLA program planning and execution.”

A member since 2001, she has performed many roles in UNYSLA.  Currently, she is the Local Area Meetings Coordinator in Albany.  Other roles that she has held are Public Relations Chair, Nominations Committee Chair, Mentoring Chair, President, Awards Chair, Local Area Meetings Co-chair, Membership Committee Chair and Secretary. She was a founding convener of the Data Caucus.

Elaine embodies everything that is great about information professionals and being a part of a professional association. To say she is deserving of this award is an understatement and it is delightful to see her amazing efforts recognized.   Congratulations Elaine!
