Reference and Instruction Librarian; SUNY Geneseo

The State University of New York at Geneseo, Milne Library, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, reference and instruction librarian. This individual will serve as liaison to the anthropology, psychology, and sociology academic departments within the social sciences. We are looking for a team member with a commitment to user services who can thrive in an environment that encourages experimentation and creativity. The ideal candidate will have a commitment to collaborative work and strong outreach skills. Major responsibilities will include:

  •     Reference and research support to faculty and students in the social sciences and other disciplines.
  •     Outreach to academic departments, student services, and community programs in the social sciences.
  •     In collaboration with library colleagues and department faculty, develop and provide specialized information literacy instruction for the social sciences.
  •     Participation in the library’s general instruction program for undergraduates.
  •     Engagement in collection development and information resources management.
  •     Develop and manage online resources and tools (such as subject guides, tutorials, and assessments) to support information literacy instruction.
  •     In collaboration with librarians, faculty, and staff, support digital scholarship initiatives.
  •     Participate in the library’s scholarly communication program with a focus on staying current with scholarly communication developments in the social sciences and fostering a dialog with social science faculty and students.
  •     Participate on library teams in support of the library’s mission.


  •     Master’s degree in information and/or library science from an ALA-accredited school or an ALA-approved foreign equivalent.
  •     Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
  •     Reference service experience.
  •     Teaching experience.


  •     Degree in the social sciences (specifically, anthropology, psychology or sociology preferred) or experience as a library liaison to social science departments.
  •     Experience using social science resources or databases such as PsycINFO, Sociological Abstracts and AnthroSource.
  •     Academic reference service experience.
  •     Teaching experience in an academic library, library research methods, or other relevant subject areas.
  •     Experience with a variety of software applications, including web apps, office programs, and emerging technologies.
  •     Demonstrated experience in enhancing service through teamwork and responsiveness to faculty, students, and colleagues.
