Meet our Board Member – Jane Minotti

Jane MinottiJane Minotti, Director of Vendor Relations of UNYSLA, is Sr. Librarian at the NYS Department of Transportation Research Library. Jane became active in the Transportation Division of SLA when she began her career at NYSDOT. As a solo librarian, she supports the programs and activities of 900 employees in the Main Office in Albany, and outreach services to eleven regions statewide. Reference services can encompass literature searches on topics from pavement, construction practices, and historic construction standards to new research and technology in highway illumination, connected vehicles, responding to extreme weather events, and climate change.

Jane credits the SLA Transportation Division as a very active network providing resources, programming and support to its members; it has provided her with opportunities to participate in activities such as the National Cooperative Highway Research Program and the Transportation Research Board. Jane’s professional interests are reference, digitization and distribution of transportation research reports, and developing LibGuides in Transportation.

How did you get to where you are?

I was fascinated with libraries when I was growing up, and the World Book Encyclopedia, which my parents invested in. When it became time to choose a career, I decided I wanted to spend my professional life in a library setting. After graduating from SUNY Potsdam with a degree in English and working in a middle school / high school library in the North Country, I began graduate school at the University at Albany. Most of my career has been in public libraries in Vermont and NYS, in youth and adult services and library administration. While I found this to be very rewarding, the position at NYS Department of Transportation represented new challenges that I wanted to pursue. I have always believed that providing your customer with the best information empowers individuals, and that the library is a community center with a specific function. At NYSDOT, I really enjoy responding to a variety of requests, providing reference and research services, and collaborating on projects with colleagues in other transportation agencies.

How long have you been a member of UNYSLA?

I have been a member of UNYSLA since 2008.

What roles have you been involved in with UNYSLA and SLA?

I served a two-year term as Treasurer of the SLA Transportation Division from 2008-2010. I have served on several committees in the Transportation Division, recently working on a “Best Practices in Transportation Literature Searches” project published by the Transportation Research Board.

What advice do you have for those who may want to get involved?

I encourage members to take advantage of the opportunities to get involved in UNYSLA. While the organization is benefiting from your contributions, you are also benefiting. Everyone has something of value to bring forth, and you will experience personal growth in the process of volunteering, sharing your expertise, and making new friends.
