Meet our Board Member – Ruth Owens

Ruth_CardCatalog2Ruth Owens is the current treasurer of UNYSLA and an assistant librarian at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF). Because SUNY ESF is a small college with a small library, Ruth has many varied responsibilities. She manages interlibrary loan and acquisitions/collection development, provides research help (reference), teaches a one-credit information literacy course, and is the librarian liaison to the chemistry and engineering departments. Ruth enjoys connecting people to information whether that is through interlibrary loan, teaching, or simply answering questions. Her professional interests include public services, resource sharing, and information literacy. She holds a MSLIS from Syracuse University and a BS in zoology from Colorado State University.

How did you get to where you are?

Like others, it was no surprise that I became a librarian. I have been interested in libraries and science for as long as I can remember. In college I realized that I could combine both interests by becoming a science librarian when my biology class went to the library for class and the librarian introduced herself as the “biological sciences librarian.” While at library school at Syracuse University, I interned at Moon Library at SUNY ESF and made some great connections. Linda Galloway (UNYSLA past president) was (and still is!) a wonderful mentor as I was an intern. I worked at a few other academic libraries doing interlibrary loan and instruction before coming back to SUNY ESF in my current position.

How long have you been a member of UNYSLA?

I have been a member of UNYSLA since 2008.

What roles have you been involved in with UNYSLA and SLA?

Currently I am in my second term as treasurer. After 2016, I will have to pass the torch to another outstanding UNYSLA member.

What is your favorite part of being a board member?

I will echo what others have said and say that the other board members are amazing and we work well together. I enjoy being a part of planning conferences and meetings and helping others get connected to our group.

What advice do you have for those who may want to get involved?

Please just jump right in. You are always welcome to our board meetings and if that sounds a little scary, please come to one of our fall or spring conference meetings and talk to one of us. One of the main reasons I got involved with UNYSLA is because I got to know other board members and they just said, “Hey Ruth, would you like to do….” There is almost always opportunity to get involved by helping out at a local meeting or joining a committee or running for an executive board position.
