Local Networking in Ithaca: SLUSH

You are all invited to the next SLUSH event:

Wednesday February 12th, 5pm

at Agava Restaurant – See Menus here:  http://www.agavarestaurant.com/
381 Pine Tree Road, Ithaca

What is SLUSH?  SLUSH stands for Savvy Librarians Uniting for Social Hour!  We are an informal group of library professional, para-professional, students and other affiliated personnel that meet regularly over dinner to discuss anything in Library Land. There is no agenda or formal outline – just show up with your success stories, your woes, questions and, of course, your appetite!  To hear about upcoming events, email us to be put on the listserv and see our Facebook Page for announcements as well.

Want to know more?  Here are some questions we get a lot:

 Q. I am not a librarian/am a staff person/don’t work in a library/etc.  Can I still come to SLUSH?

Yes – please do!  We are not exclusive – if you work in a related field or even if you’re just interested in working in libraries, we would love to see you out there.  Just keep in mind that most of the time, we will be talking about library and information-like topics.  The idea of SLUSH is to provide local networking opportunities and have a little fun as well.

 Q. Can my spouse/friends/kids/everyone I know to tag along?

Sure thing.  Just keep in mind that most of our events are at smaller, local establishments and are sometimes at small bars, so space could potentially be an issue.  This is particularly true when we are hosting a dinner event and need to give the restaurant a heads-up on how many people they are to expect.  It is rare we turn people away and it’s usually when reservations are required at the establishment and we always let you know ahead of time if that is the case.

 Q. Why have you not gone to [name of place]?  It’s my favorite!!!

Thanks for the suggestion!  We try to select where we go based on a number of factors – ease of getting there, parking situations, type and size of venue, diversity of food/drink offered to accommodate various diets, and whether or not a venue requires advance notice.  We love to mix it up so if you have a suggestion, we’d love to hear it!  We can’t promise we will end up at your favorite place, but we always add it to our growing list of SLUSH ideas.

Q. I don’t drink; does SLUSH do non-alcoholic events?

Yes; sometimes we host non-drinking events such as bowling, or ice cream outings.  Also, many of our happy hours are at bars that serve food and plenty of non-alcoholic beverages.  Again, we love trying different places, so feel free to suggest ideas.

 Q. Isn’t SLUSH just a Cornell thing?  or How is SLUSH separate from Cornell Library?

SLUSH was started by librarians who happen to work at Cornell.  However, it is independent of Cornell University Library and strives to bring together library professionals and the like in the Ithaca and surrounding areas.  Sometimes this gets confusing since CUL committees sometimes have happy hours as well.  At SLUSH, you will often see many Cornell librarians/staff attending, but we also have regulars from local library councils, school libraries and even MLIS students.
