Data 101: What is Big Data and Why Should We Care?

The fourth SLA Data 101  webinar is around the corner – Thursday, February 6, 2014  join us for Data 101: What is Big Data and Why Should We Care?

It used to be the case that retrieval of information was described as “finding the needle in the haystack.” With big data, however, the paradigm has shifted — instead of looking for the needle, what can we can learn from the whole haystack? This webinar will provide the basics for understanding what big data is and isn’t, applications and implications for librarians and information professionals. “Big Data” is more than a buzzword – and there are great opportunities for professionals who understand how to use and manage it.

Our featured speaker is Elaine Lasda Bergman is the Bibliographer for Social Welfare and Dewey Reference at the Dewey Graduate Library at the University at Albany, and is currently working on her Certificate of Advanced Study in Data Science through Syracuse University. Active for over a decade in professional associations, she currently serves as Past President of the Social Sciences Division of SLA, is a past president and now Public Relations Chair of the Upstate New York Chapter of SLA, and Past-President of the Academic and Special Libraries Section of the New York Library Association.
