SUNY New Paltz – Collection Development Librarian

Duties: SUNY New Paltz seeks a creative, forward thinking, and collegial individual to serve as Collection Development Librarian. This is a two-year appointment, renewable, tenure track position. The successful candidate will provide leadership in the selection and ordering of library materials to support the college curriculum and have current knowledge and experience about emerging practices and trends. This position works closely with liaison librarians and classroom faculty, and must build and maintain partnership internal and externally, to serve the campus and New Paltz community. The Collection Development Librarian must understand how to develop and apply qualitative and quantitative assessment to measure and track the effectiveness of the Library’s collection development program and to help inform decisions about changes and ongoing institutional needs.

This position reports to the Team Leader for Bibliographic Access and supervises two support staff and student assistants. The Collection Development Librarian will also participate in reference service and the library liaison program as a member of the Library Faculty and may have other duties as assigned by the Dean of the Library. Science, technical, engineering collection development experience or an undergraduate or graduate degree in science, engineering, or mathematics is particularly desirable. May be assigned additional duties as determined by the Dean.


  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library science, with at least three years of academic library experience and at least two years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to keep current with new technologies and practices.
  • Experience of material selection, ordering procedures, and search techniques.
  • Competency and skills in using print and electronic tools to select and deselect library materials, as well as in assessing the collection.
  • Budget experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and to monitor workflow and ensure that work is in alignment with the goals and needs of the library.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple and competing projects and deadlines.
  • Flexibility, dependability, good judgment.
  • Must be able to effectively and professionally communicate with multiple constituencies, both internal and external to the campus.
  • Physical ability to move through a three-story building, to handle a computer keyboard and to move book trucks.
