Assistant Director of Library Services

The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Library Services and is a member of the Educational Technology Services (ETS) Library Services administrative team. This position provides leadership for building staff awareness of new and emerging technologies. The position will work to improve library services and workflow. The Assistant Director oversees access services and collection development that support the curriculum by collecting and providing authoritative information resources in formats that best meet user needs. The position works closely with ETS to assure that the library’s systems are fully integrated into the broader college computing network. The Assistant Director participates in daily library operations including reference, instruction, and liaison duties.

This position provides leadership, planning, and supervision for circulation services, technical services, collection development, and inter-library loan staff. The Assistant Director promotes an inclusive workplace culture that values diversity, personal initiative, and responsibility and encourages exploration and creativity. The position will also be responsible for building on existing and creating new campus partnerships.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serves as the initial technology resource person for library staff and assists with special technology projects.
  • Collaborates closely with MCC ETS Integration Team to administer the Aleph integrated library system and interlibrary loan request system, ILLiad.
  • Collaborates with the library administration team to develop and manage an overall assessment plan for the libraries.
  • Evaluates library participation in resource sharing, collaborative collection development and other consortial programs.
  • Takes a lead role in the development of library policies and procedures.
  • Participates in budget development for library services and oversees expenditures as assigned.
  • Prepares administrative reports.
  • Collaborates with other departments to implement new technologies, services and partnerships.
  • Provides library and information literacy instruction and research assistance to the campus community.
  • Coordinates new initiatives, projects, and tasks as assigned.
  • Acts as Administrator in Charge when designated.
  • Serves as liaison to consortial partners as requested by the Director.
  • Participates in MCC, local, state, and national committees.
  • Provides occasional night and weekend coverage.
  • Responsible for adhering to the College Code of Conduct.
  • Responsible for contributing to and maintaining an inclusive and collaborative College environment.
  • Responsible for maintaining technological competencies utilized by the College.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science or equivalent from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Evidence of leadership in the management of projects and strategic initiatives.
  • A minimum of three years post MLS experience in a professional position in the library.
  • A minimum of one year of experience with library systems and computer applications.
  • A practical knowledge of emerging technologies related to the design and delivery of library services.
  • Experience delivering information literacy instruction and reference services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an administrative role including budgeting and project management.
  • Experience with wide range of standard office and graphic software packages.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Experience working at a Community College.
  • Experience working collaboratively within a large university system.
