Under the general supervision of the Head of Monograph Acquisitions, and with latitude for judgment, works in a rapidly changing, technology driven environment to acquire library resources that support the teaching and research needs of library users. As the Library transitions to a predominantly digital environment, this position will focus primarily upon acquiring electronic resources. Purchases library resources in all languages and formats, with an emphasis upon electronic monographic resources (electronic books, streaming media, etc.). Creates purchase orders in the library’s Integrated Library System (Voyager) using bibliographic records from the OCLC database, and integrates information from one or more vendor online ordering systems with Voyager. Ensures initial access to purchased e-resources in Voyager. Supplies technical support to the Library’s growing Demand Driven Acquisitions (DDA) initiatives.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Acquiring Library Resources

  • Searches purchase requests in OCLC and Voyager administrative modules
  • Verifies bibliographic and ordering information using appropriate tools and databases
  • Creates purchase orders in Voyager by importing bibliographic records from OCLC, using existing records already in Voyager, or creating a temporary record
  • Downloads e-books purchased as pdf files and other electronic files to the library‚Äôs local server and ensures access to these files through Voyager
  • Provides immediate processing of all RUSH orders (both electronic and print), including (but not limited to) those that initiate from the library’s Patron Driven Acquisitions (PDA) and Demand Driven Acquisitions (DDA) initiatives
  • Maintains vendor-supplied DDA discovery and bibliographic records for e-resources in Voyager
  • Conducts electronic resource access auditing and assists in troubleshooting and resolving access issues as needed
  • Enters or revises vendor records in the Voyager Vendor file as needed

Other duties

  • Processes foreign language and art approval shipments upon receipt
  • Receives Popular Reading titles and updates records in Voyager
  • Follows up on outstanding orders for monographic resources as necessary
  • Maintains “not yet published” and “out of print” electronic files for requested purchases
  • Provides backup for the Acquisitions Receiving Assistant

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Two years post-high school education
  • Ability to perform very detailed work with accuracy in a rapidly changing technological environment
  • Ability to set and adjust priorities with ease, and to function with a high degree of independence
  • Good computer skills and working knowledge of the Internet, spreadsheets, and word processing programs
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Aptitude for, and interest in, ongoing learning

Preferred:

  • Four years of post-high school education and 3-4 years of work experience, or equivalent combination.
  • Experience working in an academic library (preferably in a library acquisitions department)
  • Experience searching and ordering library resources, especially electronic resources
  • Familiarity with one or more online bibliographic databases, such as OCLC or Voyager
  • Working knowledge of one or more foreign languages
