Job Description: The University at Albany, SUNY, invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Director for Public Services. Reporting to the Dean and Director of Libraries, this senior administrative position provides leadership for all library public services including Reference, Information Literacy, Information Commons, Public Access (Circulation/Reserves/ILL/Document Delivery), and the Interactive Media Center. As a member of the senior administrative group, the Associate Director shares responsibility for developing and implementing the mission, goals and broad policy directions for the University Libraries.

Albany is looking for a forward-thinking, service-oriented, collaborative leader with a keen sense of the evolving role of research libraries in the digital age and demonstrated knowledge of best practices and current trends in all areas related to public services in research libraries. The Associate Director provides overall leadership and vision for the Public Services Division, which consists of 20 academic and professional faculty, 14 staff, and graduate and undergraduate student assistants. The Associate Director’s responsibilities include: managing the three divisional departments (Reference, Information Literacy, and Access Services); measuring and assessing outcomes of divisional activities; proactively planning for improved services; collaborating with other campus units to develop services including the Information Commons; and advising and mentoring faculty. The successful candidate will be a creative, collegial, energetic and experienced senior administrator with a solid record of leadership and innovation. S/he will demonstrate a breadth of knowledge about research libraries and a commitment to continual professional development through scholarly research and publication, presentations, and participation in national professional associations.



  • Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent (accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization)
  • Strong service orientation and ability to foster communication, collaboration and cooperation
  • Hands-on experience providing reference and research services and/or instruction in an academic library setting
  • Demonstrated successful and progressively responsible experience developing, managing and assessing user-focused services in an academic or research library
  • Evidence of: excellent leadership and management skills; flexibility; successful and increasingly responsible experience managing projects and supervising and motivating library faculty and staff; strong vision for the future of library public services; broad knowledge of trends in higher education and academic libraries; ability to work collaboratively with internal and external units; and excellent analytical, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of emerging technologies in higher education settings
  • All applicants must meet the University Libraries’ criteria (including publication and professional service) for appointment at the academic faculty rank of Associate Librarian.
  • Applicants must address in their applications their ability to work with a culturally diverse population.


  • Experience working in a public institution and unionized environment
  • Experience with library space planning, grant writing, and promoting and marketing library services
