Position Description: The University of Rochester seeks an innovative, collaborative, technologically adept, and service oriented librarian to join the Science and Engineering Libraries team. The Research Librarian for Biology will support scholarly pursuits of the faculty, staff and students in the Department of Biology and may serve as liaison to other science departments. The successful candidate will be an active participant in the research, teaching, and learning processes of these departments and will be embedded in laboratories, research groups, and online and flipped classrooms.

The Research Librarian for Biology is expected to build strong relationships with faculty and other campus professionals and establish collaborative partnerships within and across the institution. They will provide face-to-face and virtual reference and consultation services, develop web-based instruction, and employ technology in innovative ways in support of the academic mission. Working collaboratively with other librarians, the successful candidate will develop high quality collections. The Librarian will engage and collaborate with faculty, staff and students around current and emerging digital technologies for learning and research. The Librarian in partnership with the School of Arts and Sciences will promote undergraduate research opportunities and will provide a dynamic, student-centered research environment that encourages inquiry, critical thinking, and creativity for our students. The Librarian will develop an understanding of the data needs of the Biology department and work with the Data Librarian to meet their data management, curation and visualization needs. The Research Librarian participates in departmental and library planning, and will serve on library-wide committees, working groups and teams. The successful candidate is expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. The Research Librarian for Biology reports to the Director of Science and Engineering Libraries.

Qualifications

Required: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science; a degree or course work in Biology or science discipline; demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging technologies as they contribute to meeting the needs of faculty and students in biology; strong communication and organizational skills; strong commitment to public service; the ability to work effectively with diverse library users and staff; experience with science and engineering information sources; demonstrated ability to collaborate in a team environment.

Preferred: One or more years of relevant experience, preferably in an academic research library; knowledge of e-science and scientific data; innovation in delivering information services; experience with online instruction and embedding the library in online education; familiarity with trends in digital scholarly communication.
