White House directive seeks to expand access to publicly-funded research

Last month, the White House announced a new directive in response to a We the People petition (which received over 65,000 signatures) that requested free access to the results of taxpayer-funded research.

The White House’s directive stipulates that federal agencies with a budget over $100 million dollars per year (a category which includes most major scientific agencies of the federal government such as NASA, NIH, NOAA, NSF and similar) make such research freely available within 1 year of initial publication. The agencies covered by the new directive have 6 months to develop a plan of action to comply.
