Hire Me! Finding an Academic Library Job

By Esther Jackson

“Hire Me!: Finding an Academic Library Job” is a workshop created and presented by Dean Hendrix and Michelle Zafron of the University at Buffalo Libraries. This full-day event, generously sponsored by the Upstate New York Chapter of the Special Libraries Association and the SUNY Buffalo Department of Library and Information Studies, was attended by students at various stages in their academic careers, many with an interest in working in special libraries and archives.

The workshop engaged students through lecture and activities, focusing on topics such as analyzing job announcements, developing effective resumes, writing cover letters that communicate, getting the right references, and preparing for interviews. When surveyed, all of the students who attended the workshop rated the experience highly, and many had positive comments. “I feel so much more prepared for the entire job applying process, from beginning to end.”wrote one attendee.
