Coordinator of Research Services for the Hotel, Labor, and Management Libraries

The Hotel, Labor, and Management libraries seek enthusiastic, qualified candidates for the professional position of Coordinator of Research Services. The Coordinator of Research Services leads the development, implementation, and assessment of exceptional research support programs and services to the three schools served by these libraries, as well as the broader Cornell community.  In addition, the successful candidate will be part of a team providing targeted public services support to the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management. The position is part of the Research and Learning Services department responsible for providing research, teaching and learning, outreach, and collection development services across the consolidated libraries serving Cornell’s ILR, Hotel Administration, and Management Schools.  The Coordinator will participate collaboratively in the on-going development of the department and its services and serves on the team of coordinators who lead RLS activities.  In 2010, the Management Library consolidated with the Nestlé Hospitality Library and the Catherwood Industrial Labor Relations Library to form a single structure serving Cornell’s specialized business and labor Schools.  The consolidated structure serves 1805 undergraduates, 1314 graduate students, 143 resident faculty, and extensive distance education, executive education, and extension programs. The Management Library serves the MBAs, PhDs, faculty, and staff of the top-tier Johnson School, as well as Cornell’s broader community of business researchers.  As a member of the Management Library’s public services team, the successful candidate will provide research and teaching services focused on business information. The Coordinator will assist patrons with in-depth business research, as well as lead business research workshops and develop online materials in support of the library’s instruction program.   S/he will also provide library outreach services including developing relationships with faculty and students through school events and personal interactions.

Reporting to the Associate Director, the Coordinator of Research Services is responsible for:

  • coordinating the provision of research services in the Hotel, Labor, and Management Libraries;
  • providing direct research assistance focused on the Johnson School community;
  • maintaining an expertise in business and management resources;
  • developing and preparing content to support use of library resources;
  • designing, teaching  and evaluating instruction sessions, including working with faculty to develop curriculum-specific instruction programs as well as coordinating research support for large classroom assignments;
  • participating in the on-going development and assessment of the Research and Learning Services department;
  • coordinating the provision of research services by librarians, staff, and students, in the Hotel, Labor, and Management Libraries
  • collaborating with key stakeholders in the consolidated libraries;
  • directly supervising three FTE Research and Learning Services team members
  • maintaining activity in professional organizations, library and university committees, and scholarly pursuits.

The Coordinator of Research Services is an innovative, enthusiastic, service-focused professional who is able to approach a leadership position in a new structure with an eagerness to collaborate formally and informally with other librarians, archivists, and staff. Additionally:

  • S/he works well with colleagues as part of teams, drawing on and contributing to their subject and library expertise, but is also able to work independently.

  • S/he has a strong understanding of standard and traditional library practices but also embraces the change and opportunities that new technologies bring to the field.
  • S/he has excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills. S/he understands the research process and can keep the researchers’ needs at the front of the planning and execution of their work.
  • S/he models and maintains the Consolidated Libraries’ core values of collaboration, excellence, flexibility, innovation, integrity, and service and strives to achieve organizational success, team cohesiveness, positive and constructive responsiveness to change, and respect from those we serve.


  • M.L.S. or equivalent graduate degree
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in academic or corporate library public service.
  • Subject knowledge in business / management.
  • Experience using and teaching others to use library resources, including bibliographic and full-text databases, web resources, etc.
  • Ability to provide on-the-job training and/or guidance to others.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical and critical-thinking skills.
  • Fluent oral and written English language skills.
  • Strong collegial, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong service ethic and orientation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA or equivalent degree/experience.
  • Academic social science library research and library teaching experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
