Job Description – University Archivist (#1200265)

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Archivist manages the day-to-day activities of the University Archives, including supervision of staff and student assistants. He/she builds and manages university archives record groups and unit-related digital collections, historical manuscript collections, as well as non-literary rare book holdings and applies and promulgates standards and best practices in providing access to archival and manuscript collections through finding aids, catalog records, and other descriptive means. The incumbent provides hands-on support for the arrangement and description of archival and manuscript collections and provides reference, consultation, and instruction services related to University Archives collections. The Archivist develops methods for maintaining and tracking statistical records of unit operations and use of collections, actively engages in outreach to promote the use of the collections, particularly student use of primary source materials. He/she creates and coordinates exhibitions, public programs, and publications that promote the university and the use of the University Archives and pursues grant funding and development opportunities to support University Archives activities.

The incumbent serves as records manager for the University Libraries and participates in campus-wide records management activities and compliance. The Archivist facilitates effective working relationships and works collaboratively within the library, across campus, and with external agencies. The incumbent pursues professional development opportunities including research, publication, and professional association activities, to meet library-wide and University criteria for tenure.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program, with a concentration in Archives Management; equivalent training and experience may be substituted for the concentration in Archives Management
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in a professional position in an archives or manuscript repository
  • Demonstrated mastery of current archival practice, and knowledge of developing trends in the field including electronic records management and management of born-digital material
  • Experience with archival database applications, web-based technologies, digitization technologies and standards, and metadata standards (specifically DACS, MARC, and EAD)
  • Ability to conceptualize and plan content for selective digitization of archival materials
  • Experience with exhibit development and design
  • Demonstrated skills in management and leadership, including written and oral communication, project management, and planning
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaboratively, and effectively with diverse groups of faculty, students, staff, and the general public
  • Ability to guide the work of others
  • Experience with donor relations
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and evidence of professional scholarly interests and potential to meet the University at Buffalo’s promotion and tenure standards in librarianship, research, service, and outreach

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA)
  • Grant writing experience
