Union College – Collection Development Librarian

Job Description – Collection Development Librarian

The Collection Development Librarian is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, and directing the Schaffer Library collection development program, establishing policies and directing projects in a collaborative environment including work with the Access Services, Public Services, Resource Sharing, Special Collections and Technical Services units. The selected candidate is also responsible for selecting monographs and serials in all formats; making recommendations concerning the acquisition of print and electronic journals, databases, and other online resources, participating in the reference and instructional service programs of Schaffer Library, overseeing selected collection management, conservation, acquisitions, and weeding activities, serving as liaison to various cooperative collection development consortia, organizations and materials vendors, and participating in relevant library, College, regional and/or national committees.

The Collection Development Librarian is a member of the general College faculty, serves on the Reference Desk some nights and weekends as needed, and reports directly to the College Librarian.

MLS from ALA-accredited library or information science school and 3-5 years of relevant experience in an academic library. Experience with integrated online library systems and electronic ordering; demonstrated awareness of how collection development supports research and teaching in a liberal arts college. Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work collaboratively across organizational units, and strong project management and diplomatic skills. Service orientation and ability to work with diverse cultural groups.

Desired: Reference experience in an academic institution. Second master’s degree is also desirable.
